That’s a Wrap…and We’re not Talking Chicken Caesar. Carborro United has Done its Good Deed.
In the spring of 2020 we watched as most of our favorite places shut down, one by one, and sadly many are not coming back. But there was one beacon of bright orange light during that time. It started in downtown Carrboro, did a brief stint at Carrboro High School, and finally settled its prominent trailer and bright orange tent at University Mall.
Within days of the pandemic shutdown, Carrboro United Food Hub was born. It was not only a place where you could get fresh vegetables, meats, and prepared meals for your family during the pandemic lock down, but it was also a lifeline to many local businesses, restaurants, and most importantly employees.
The ease of online ordering, a constantly rotating menu, and contactless pick-up allowed the CU Food Hub to be a huge, community, overnight success. After only 6 months of providing local restaurants an outlet to keep feeding their customers, and providing a place for Chapel Hill/Carrboro residents to pick up some healthy meals for their families (and to pet the ever-present cute black dog doubling as a CU mascot) Carborro United had done over one million dollars in business. This incredible success continued through the winter and into the spring of 2021 with the florescent orange tent vigilantly marking pick-up days on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday in rain, sleet, and even oppressive NC summer heat.
Good Bowls has been happy to be a part of this pandemic business experiment that quickly became a town staple and lifeline. Throughout the year we were able to deliver hundreds of bowls to people all throughout town looking for a convenient, nutritious, frozen meal.
So as restaurants are increasingly opening back up and we’re all heading back to our favorite haunts, Carrboro United Food Hub did its final food drop off on Saturday, June 26th and closed its tractor trailer doors for good. But don’t worry, if you’re hit by a hankering for some roasted vegetables in your favorite Good Bowl, you can still order from our website for home delivery or just head on down to your local Weaver Street Market to pick some up.
