Homegrown Grits: Ground in Town - Red Tail Grains

Red Tail Grains Farm is located in Mebane, NC.  Since 2013 they have been filling an underserved niche in the local food system by growing and harvesting modern and heritage grains.  They practice a holistic approach to farming which includes not using herbicides, fungicides, or any synthetic fertilizers.

They recently acquired a 26” Granite New American Stone Mill.  Daniel Cowan and George Allen had been selling whole grains to bakeries and breweries, but with the recent addition of this amazing mill, they’ve started offering a much wider variety of products and now sell directly to consumers.

One of their most popular products as of late has been their grits.  They are having great success with the Bloody Butcher and the Polento Orange Grits.  They grow the corn, harvest it themselves, and after it’s dried they run it through their mill right there on their farm. This organic, home-grown process maintains all of the healthy oils that are naturally found in the grains.  The crushed grains are then run through a sifter, which sorts out whole grain cereal, grits, and corn meal; all of which they bag up and sell right here in North Carolina.

People looking to have amazing whole grain cereal in the morning, cook up some tasty cheese grits, or throw some freshly milled cornmeal pancakes are flocking to the Redtail Grains booth at the Carrboro’s Farmers Market, picking the shelf clean at the Saxapawhaw General Store, or supporting their local food system by getting Redtail grits, grains, and cereal at a variety of other local grocers.

Part of the mission at Good Bowls is supporting the local food system by locally sourcing as many ingredients as they can.  So when we ran into Red Tail Grains at the Carrboro Farmer’s Market one Saturday morning, we jumped at the chance to partner with them.  We found their Cateto Orange grits made a great addition to our Good Bowls so we’re now working to source an increasing amount of our grits from the folks at Redtail Grains.
